Saint Benedict and his twin sister, Saint Scholastica, are the classic experts in teaching all the
“Do’s and Don’ts” in living daily life as Jesus taught us. The Rule of Benedict is a practical
guide of living the “Jesus life” on a daily basis.
We begin each monthly meeting with an abbreviated form of Vespers, which includes doing
Lectio Divina on the gospel reading for the next day’s Sunday service. If anyone is not familiar
with Vespers or Lectio Divina, a simple explanation is given and one is free to follow along to
become comfortable. Both Vespers and Lectio Divina are traditional to Benedictines.
We follow prayer with study/discussion on St. Benedict’s Rule and other spiritual material. We
are presently studying Chapter 4 of the Rule, using Michael Casey’s book, “Tools for Good
Living.”
Integrating the teachings of St. Benedict into daily living and spreading Benedictine (as taught
by Jesus) values into the world around us is integral to our vocation. The Rule of Benedict’s
emphasis on moderation, respect for all life, care of the sick, good stewardship, hospitality and
mutual support and love can transform our homes, civic communities and places of work.
All who are interested in visiting us are welcome. You do not need to be Catholic; the Rule of
Benedict is based on scripture for all to be a part. Both women and men are welcome, even if
you are already an Oblate with another monastery.
Join the Red Plains Benedictine Oblates of Mount St. Scholastica each second (2nd ) Saturday of
